GLIAC Announces 2021 Outdoor Track & Field Awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced Award winners for the 2021 Outdoor Track & Field Season following voting conducted by the league's head coaches. The Track & Field Athletes of the Year will be announced next Monday, May 17th.

Men's Awards

 

Trevor Bassitt, Ashland  | Track Athlete of the Meet |  High Point Athlete of the Meet

On Friday (May 7) at the GLIAC Championships, Bassitt set three new league meet records, including in the men's 400-meter hurdles, where he won in 49.04 seconds – beating his own school record and moving into a tie for fourth place on the NCAA Division II all-time list outdoors. That time also is No. 4 this season outdoors for any American-born runner. Bassitt also on Friday won the men's 110 hurdles (13.61 seconds) and was the anchor of the winning men's 4x100 relay (40.26 seconds), setting two more circuit records in the process.


Justin Scavarda, Grand Valley State | Field Athlete of the Meet

 After being named the GLIAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, Justin Scavarda capped off his GLIAC Outdoor career with a team-leading 20-point performance in the field.  Scavarda swept the discus field with a distance of 54.33m while earning a pair of fourth-place marks in the shot put (17.59m) and hammer throw (60.71m).  The Laker senior helped lead the team to its third consecutive title with his top-five finishes. 


Noah Koch, Ashland | Freshman Field Athlete of the Meet

Koch was the runner-up in the men's discus throw at 53.86 meters/176-feet-8. He is the first Ashland men's athlete to earn GLIAC Outdoor Men's Freshman Field Athlete of the Meet honors.


Calvin Hatcher, Grand Valley St. | Freshman Track Athlete of the Meet

 Calvin Hatcher had his first taste of GLIAC action last week and added 12 points to the team's dominant 300.50 point first-place performance.  The Laker freshman collected a couple fourth-place finishes in the 100m (10.79) and 200m (21.64) and helped lead the 4x100m relay team to a runner-up finish of 41.14 seconds.  Hatcher's 12 points made him the program's second-leading scorer of the meet.


Grand Valley State Jerry Baltes, Lou Andreadis, Steve Jones, Aaron Watson, Reynaldo Radlin, Matt Conly | Coaching Staff of the Year

 The Grand Valley State coaches captured the men's and women's Coaching Staff of the Year title following the program's third GLIAC Outdoor Championship sweep on Friday.  The women captured the crown with 248 points and 10 first-place and second-place finishes, each, and three other podium stances.  The men posted a whopping 300.50 points thanks to nine first-place marks and 13 other podium finishes.


 

Women's Awards 

 

Cheyenne Williamson, Saginaw Valley State | Track Athlete of the Meet | Field Athlete of the Meet | High Point Athlete of the Meet | Freshman Track Athlete of the Meet | Freshman Field Athlete of the Meet 

The GLIAC announced that Williamson is the 2021 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet, Field Athlete of the Meet, High-Point Athlete of the Meet, Freshman Track Athlete of the Meet, and Freshman Field Athlete of the Meet, sweeping the individual awards on the women's side. Williamson spent a large portion of the three days at Davenport University standing at the top of the first-place podium. Individually, she won the GLIAC title in the 100-meter hurdles (13.94 seconds), the 200-meter dash (24.15 seconds), the long jump (6.09 meters), and the high jump (1.73 meters), all hitting the NCAA DII Provisional mark.  Williamson was also a member of the 4X100 and 4X400-meter relay teams for the Cardinals that took first place. The awards for the outdoor season are in addition to the four individual GLIAC honors and three national championships that she garnered during the 2021 indoor season.
