BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the 10th weekend of the regular season. Ferris State University freshman hitter Allyson Cappel earned GLIAC Volleyball North Division honors for the third time this season, while Tiffin freshman middle hitter Jenna Huffman captured South Division accolades also for the third time this year.
NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Allyson Cappel, Ferris State
Ferris State University freshman hitter Allyson Cappel led the Bulldogs to three wins this past week as the Bulldogs secured the GLIAC North Division Championship outright for the third-straight year. The Bulldog rookie averaged 3.80 kills, 1.60 digs and 0.50 blocks per set as FSU swept rival Grand Valley State and then topped Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State in road triumphs. Cappel produced 16 kills with four digs in FSU's 3-1 win at LSSU on Friday, which secured at least a share of the divisional crown. She then came back to notch a team-best 14 kills with eight digs and two blocks in a sweep over SVSU in Saturday's showdown of the top two teams in the division. Cappel opened the week with eight kills, four digs, three aces and three blocks in FSU's dominating sweep over rival GVSU at home on Tuesday. For the week, she talllied 38 kills, 16 digs, five blocks and four aces while hitting .258 overall. She averaged 4.6 points per set as FSU stretched its winning streak to 19-straight matches.
SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Jenna Huffman, Tiffin
Tiffin freshman middle hitter Jenna Huffman had a record week for the Dragons, totaling 50 kills (3.57 k/s), 31 digs (2.21 d/s), and 19 total blocks (1.36 b/s). In Tiffin's close loss to Ashland, Huffman swatted 10 kills and finished with 8 blocks. On Friday, Jenna collected 15 kills, 12 digs, and 6 blocks in a win over Ohio Dominican. The top performance of the week came Saturday against Lake Erie. Jenna set TU a single match record with 25 kills. Huffman hit .444 for the match, and for the week hit at a .369 mark. Currently, Jenna leads the GLIAC in blocks per set with 1.22, and is 3rd in hitting percentage with a .359 average.
