GLIAC – Michigan Tech volleyball middle blocker Stephanie Dietrich and football defensive end Cody Goldsworthy have been named the recipients of the 2017-18 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Pat Riepma Postgraduate Scholarship. The honor, which awards each recipient, one male and one female, $5,000 in aid to the graduate school of their choice, was voted on by the Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) of the GLIAC member institutions.
Stephanie Dietrich | Michigan Technological University
Stephanie Dietrich, a middle blocker from Stillwater, Minnesota, had an outstanding 2017 season both the court and in the classroom. Dietrich was a GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team selection and competed in all 31 matches for the Huskies this season. Dietrich helped anchor the front line of the Tech defense by registering 82 total blocks. She also tallied 195 total kills which equated to an average of 1.76 kills per set. Dietrich closed her career with 239 bocks and 799 kills in four seasons on the court for the Huskies. She was also a GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honoree for three of those four seasons.
Cody Goldsworthy | Michigan Technological University
Cody Goldsworthy, a defensive end from L'Anse, Michigan, averaged 4.2 tackles per game, led the Huskies in sacks (3), and was second in tackles for a loss (9.5). His tackles for a loss totals cost opposing offenses 48 yards and his three sacks resulted in a loss of 27 yards. Goldsworthy also recovered a fumble which setup a touchdown in Tech's win over Davenport. His tackle totals of 46 were a single season career high as well as his 9.5 tackles for a loss.
Goldsworthy has 106 career tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 18.5 tackles for a loss. Goldsworthy was named to the All-GLIAC 2nd Team, a Don Hansen All-Super Region Three 3rd Team honoree, named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team, and was recently selected as the Defensive Lineman of the Year when Tech football announced the end of the year team awards.
The GLIAC Postgraduate Scholarship is named after former Northwood University Athletic Director and head football coach Pat Riepma who passed away in July of 2015 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Pat spent over 21 years at Northwood and was the all-time winningest coach in football history as well as the long time Athletic Director. While his achievements on the field and on behalf of the athletic department are impressive, Pat will be forever remembered for the person he was. Pat was a passionate, spiritual man who inspired thousands of people even before he became sick. While Pat is gone, his mantra of “Go MAD”- Go Make a Difference, will live on.
