DU's Whittaker, GVSU's McCarroll and FSU's Jewett named GLIAC Football Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 4 of the 2022 football season. Davenport senior quarterback Jason Whittaker earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, Grand Valley State junior defensive end Christian McCarroll received GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition and Ferris State freshman kicker Eddie Jewett was named GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jason Whittaker, Davenport

Jason Whittaker got his first start for the Panthers this season and helped lead Davenport to a 51-17 homecoming win over Northwood. He set the school record with five touchdown passes and did so in the first 36 minutes of game time. He tossed four in the first half and the fifth coming at the 9:00 mark of the third quarter. He also set a school record accounting for six touchdowns as he had a one-yard scoring run in the second quarter. He finished 21-of-29 through the air and had the second-best passing yardage day at DU with 360 yards. He also had the highest completion percentage (72.4) of a quarterback to have thrown at least 20 passes in a game. DU also set a school record with 586 total yards in the rout of the Timberwolves.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Christian McCarroll, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State junior defensive end Christian McCarroll was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his stellar play in the #2 Lakers’ 48-9 victory over Wayne State. McCarroll tallied three total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss (-18), 1.0 quarterback sacks (-4) and forced a fumble. GVSU limited Wayne State to 54 rushing yards, 33 of which came on a QB scramble. McCarroll is a key piece of a defense that has not allowed 100-yards rushing in a game by an opponent.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Eddie Jewett, Ferris State

Ferris State University freshman kicker Eddie Jewett had a big day in the Bulldogs' dominating 69-3 homecoming win over unbeaten Waldorf University on Saturday at Top Taggart Field. Jewett accounted for 15 total points in the win, converting nine-of-nine PAT tries along with making a pair of field goals in the triumph. He connected on a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter to give FSU a 10-3 lead and added a 27-yard field goal in the second half in addition to being perfect on point-after opportunities.
