2017 All-GLIAC Men's Soccer Awards Announced

2017 GLIAC MEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

BAY CITY, Mich. – The 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Soccer awards have been announced after voting conducted by the league's coaches. The awards were presented at a banquet on the campus of Northwood University prior to the start of the 2017 GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament semifinals on Thursday night.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Davenport junior Brogan Shrimpton had a breakthrough season for the Panthers in 2017 leading the GLIAC with 17 goals. The junior from Benoni, South Africa nearly doubled his goal output from his sophomore season (9) and filled in the scoring gap left by departing NAIA All-Americans in TJ Ifaturoti and Jake Love from last season. Shrimpton got off to a red-hot start scoring a goal in the team's first five matches. He scored 12 goals during that stretch including hat tricks against Missouri-St. Louis and Ashland. He scored four goals against the Eagles which was one shy of the school record. He was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for three straight weeks to start the season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Davenport junior Stephen Carroll
was a steady force on the back line for the Panthers in 2017. He logged the fourth-most minutes on the team (1,540) and has not missed a start in his two years with the program. Carroll has also shown his ability to provide offense and ranks tied for second on the team with three goals. He helped anchor a defense which ranks third in the GLIAC allowing 1.19 goals per game and posted four shutouts this season. Carroll was named First Team All-WHAC as a sophomore and was NAIA Honorable Mention All-American at Martin Methodist as a freshman.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Saginaw Valley's Michael Hamilton
had a stellar freshman campaign for the Cardinals, scoring five goals while adding three assists to rank second on the team with 13 points. He ranks sixth in the GLIAC with his five goals and 13 points. Of his 29 shots, he put 16 on goal and had one game-winner for the Cardinals. That .552 shot-on-goal percentage was tops for the Cardinals, who led the league in scoring with 33 goals and 2.06 goals per match. He is the second straight Cardinal freshman to earn the honor.

GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
Saginaw Valley sophomore goalkeeper Connor Keane
had another sensational season for Saginaw Valley between the posts in 2017. Keane started all 16 matches for the Cardinals, racking up a 12-3-1 overall record with six solo shutouts, adding another combined shutout. He posted a save percentage of .761, ranking second, and allowed a GLIAC-best 0.68 goals per match. The 11 goals allowed for the season also led the league and is a regular season record for SVSU's defense. Keane's 0.68 goals per match average is a single season record, as are his 13 career shutouts. He is one win behind the all-time record of 28 as well. Keane is the first Cardinal goalkeeper to earn this award.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Saginaw Valley's Andy Wagstaff
earned his third straight GLIAC Coach of the Year honor in as many years patrolling the sidelines for the Cardinals. He led the team to an overall mark of 12-3-1 and 9-2-1 mark in league play. The Cards scored a league-leading 33 goals and allowed the least with a mark of 11, pitching seven shutouts. Saginaw Valley has collected 42 wins under Wagstaff's direction and the three losses in 2017 are an all-time low for the regular season at SVSU. The Cardinals have garnered seven of the past nine GLIAC Coach of the Year awards.
