Saginaw Valley, Davenport Advance to GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament Final

2017 GLIAC MEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The semifinal round of the 2017 GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament took place on Friday with a pair of exciting matches taking place on the campus of Northwood University. No. 2 Saginaw Valley and No. 4 Davenport will advance to Sunday's title match slated for Noon in Midland.

After a scoreless first half in the first semifinal, No. 2 seed Saginaw Valley broke through in the 69th minute when Chris Jacovou got past the defense and snuck a shot over the Northern Michigan goalkeeper. That shot bounced off the crossbar and was cleaned-up by Michael Hamilton, who got a foot on it and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead and eventual game-winning goal which propelled the Cardinals on to Sunday's title match.

No. 1 Northwood took an early 1-0 advantage in the second semifinal when Zachary Bakos found the back of the net in the ninth minute to put the home team on top. No. 4 seed Davenport found momentum when the Panthers scored twice in the span of 2:28 when GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year Brogan Shrimpton beat the keeper in the 70th minute for the equalizer before his teammate GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year Stephen Carroll registered the go-ahead score in the 73rd minutes. Shrimpton would once again find the score sheet with a goal in the 83rd minute to put the contest out of reach.

Due to Davenport University's current status as NCAA Division II provisional members, Saginaw Valley will automatically receive the conference's automatic bid into this year's NCAA Tournament.
