Ashland’s Daugherty Named 2013 GLIAC Women’s Basketball “Player of the Year”

GLIAC Honors: SVSU's Wendling Named "Freshman of the Year"; Wayne State's Lohr Tabbed "Coach of the Year"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University senior forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/River View) was named the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's basketball "Player of the Year" in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Saginaw Valley State University forward Emily Wendling (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) was tabbed  "Freshman of the Year" while Wayne State University's Carrie Lohr was named "Coach of the Year" by her peers.

 Daugherty is the GLIAC "Player of the Year" for the second consecutive season. Daugherty leads the GLIAC in scoring (22.1 ppg.) and rebounding (14.0 rpg.). She is third in three-point field goal percentage (44.2), fourth in field goal percentage (54.0), sixth in assists per game (3.5) and seventh in assist-turnover ratio (1.6). Daugherty established an NCAA Division II record for consecutive double-doubles (34) this season. The senior was named a first team Academic All-American and is the Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America of the year.  Daugherty has missed eight games due to injury, but has still been the anchor for an AU team that is ranked second in the nation. She has led AU to a GLIAC South Division title and a GLIAC regular season championship for the second consecutive season.

Wendling has posted double-digit rebounds in 11 games, while recording 10 double-doubles, fourth most of any freshman in the nation. Wendling is fifth in the GLIAC and 17th in the nation in field goal percentage (53.8) to lead all freshmen in the country. Wendling averaged 15.5 points (seventh GLIAC) in the regular season, the 3rd highest points per game average amongst freshman in the nation. She is also seventh in the conference in rebounds pulling down 8.3 rebounds per contest.  Her 80.5 percent free throw shooting is sixth best freshman nationally amongst freshmen. Wendling has been dominant all season long helping the Lady Cardinals finish the regular season at the .500 mark or better overall for the first time since 2003-04 season and the first time in the conference since 1998-99. Saginaw Valley clinched a spot in the GLIAC Tournament for this first time since the 2006-2007 season.

After leading Wayne State to a share of the 2012-13 GLIAC North Division title, Warrior second-year head coach Carrie Lohr has been selected as the GLIAC Women's Basketball 'Coach of the Year."  Lohr led a remarkable turnaround this year as WSU won 10 more conference games than a season ago despite losing two seniors to injury.  She molded a group of five returning letterwinners with five newcomers into the first GLIAC title team for WSU since the 1980-81 campaign.  Lohr becomes the first Wayne State coach since Diane Wisnewski (1994-95) to be voted GLIAC "Coach of the Year."  The 17 GLIAC wins by this year's squad is a school record while the 19 wins overall is third-most in program history.
