Ashland's Suzy Wollenhaupt Tabbed "Freshman of the Year"; SVSU's Jamie Pewinski Named "Coach of the Year"
BAY CITY, Mich. - Hillsdale junior forward Megan Fogt (Anna, Ohio / Anna) was named the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's basketball "Player of the Year" in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Ashland University forward Suzy Wollenhaupt (Beavercreek, Ohio / Carroll) was tabbed "Freshman of the Year" while Saginaw Valley State University's Jamie Pewinski was named "Coach of the Year" by her peers.
Fogt enjoyed an historic season in 2013-14, as she set multiple records for the Chargers. She finished the regular season as the NCAA Division II leader in average rebounds per game at 16.2, grabbing nearly four more rebounds per game than any other player in the nation. She also led the GLIAC in blocked shots and field goals made, while ranking second in the conference in scoring average. She set a GLIAC single-game record by going 14-for-15 from the field in a Feb. 27 game against the University of Findlay, and ranked second in the NCAA Division II with 21 double-doubles.
Wollenhaupt, a 6-1 forward, leads the Eagles in scoring (16.3 points per game.) and
rebounding (8.2 per game). She ranks fifth in the GLIAC in both categories. The rookie is second in the league in blocked shots per game (2.2) and she ranks 12th in field goal percentage (49.1). Wollenhaupt had eight double-doubles (points-rebounds) this season. In the final game of the year, a first-round GLIAC tournament game against Malone University, she collected a season-high 15 rebounds. She is the second Ashland player to receive the award, joining guard Amber Rall (2004).
In her third season at the helm for the SVSU women's basketball team, Pewinski has led a turnaround that resulted in back-to-back appearances in the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons, when Pewinski herself was a member of the Lady Cardinal basketball squad. The 14 victories for SVSU in 2013-14 is the most for the program since the 2003-04 season and the 12 league victories is the most since the 98-99 squad posted 14 victories. Under Pewinski's direction this season, the team broke school records for three-point field goal percentage (39.1%) and free throw percentage (77.1%) while senior guard Kristen Greene set a new mark for single-season free throw percentage with 89.2%. The Lady Cardinals led the league with the 39.1% three-point percentage and was second with the 77.1% free throw percentage.
