MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University department of athletics has announced the addition of Michael Chapman as assistant athletic director for compliance.  Chapman comes to Northern Michigan after serving as the assistant director of compliance at Wingate University.

“Mike's background includes an exceptional combination of health care knowledge and NCAA compliance expertise,” said director of athletics Forrest Karr. “He will have a positive impact and help our student-athletes be successful.”

Chapman earned his bachelors of science degree in athletic training at Michigan State University in 2012.  He was also a student athletic trainer for football, men's basketball and swimming and diving while at Michigan State.  As a Spartan he also participated with the MSU Spartan Fund where he was a worker with the Munn Ice Arena Club/Suites for three hockey seasons.

He then served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Wingate University where he earned his master of arts in sport management degree.  After spending a year as a trainer for Bulldog football and men's lacrosse, Chapman then became the assistant director of compliance at Wingate.

As the assistant director Chapman assisted in the management of the NCAA Eligibility Center for Wingate where he monitered student-athlete eligibility for over 540 student-athletes.  He also directed game day operations for basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer and volleyball along with organizing rules education sessions for university staff and student-athletes.

In addition to his compliance responsibilities, Chapman also developed a student-athlete support service program for all 22 athletic programs at Wingate.

"Mike's experience matches very well with the responsibilities of this position," said search committee member and NMU registrar Kim Rotundo.  "He is knowledgeable regarding NCAA regulations and the processes needed to ensure compliance.  We are excited to have him join the NMU staff."

Chapman has volunteer experience at several championship events with the most notable events being the 2009 Texas Alamo Bowl, 2010 Big Ten Swim and Dive Championships, and the 2010 and 2014 NCAA Final Four.

"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join the Northern Michigan University community and serve as the assistant athletic director for compliance," said Chapman.  "I would like to thank Mr. Forrest Karr and the hiring committee for creating such a welcoming and supportive environment and I am eager to start the upcoming academic year."
