GLIAC Men's Golf Teams Wrap Up Play at D-II Super Regional

JEFFERSON, Mo. – Grand Valley State University led a contingent of seven Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf teams at the NCAA Super Regional Monday-Wednesday (May 7-9). The three-day, 54-hole event was held at the Jefferson City Country Club.  The course played as a 7,112 yard, par 72.

The Lakers placed sixth in the event after carding rounds of 296, 296 and 295 for a 23-over-par total of 887.  Ferris State University finished ninth with a +31 score of 895 (300-294-301).

Ashland University placed 16th with a 918 (+54) total, followed by Tiffin University in 17th place (920, +56), the University of Findlay in 18th place (924, +60), Wayne State University in 19th place (936, +72) and Northwood University in 20th (941, +77).

Individually, the GLIAC was led by Ferris State University Kyle Wittenbach (Lowell, Mich.), who placed tied for fourth in the field.  Wittenbach will advance to the NCAA Division II Championship as the top two individuals not associated with one of the five qualifying teams move on to the D-II Championship.

Wittenbach carded a final-round score of 69 to move into a tie for fourth place with Trey Lawson of Cameron (Okla.), who earned the other individual bid.  The Bulldog golfer shot 75 in the first round and an even-par 72 in round two before his three-under final round to finish at 216 or even par for the tournament.

With his placing, Wittenbach will now take part in the 2012 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships slated for May 15-19 at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky., as part of the 2012 Division II Spring Championships Festival to be hosted by Bellarmine University and the Louisville Sports Commission.

Below are notes from the teams and individuals that competed in the Super Regional:

 

Ashland - The Ashland University men's golf team finished in 16th place in the NCAA Midwest/South Central Regional Championships after completing the final round of the tournament Wednesday (May 9). The tournament was played at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo... The Eagles carded an 18-over par 306 for the third straight day to finish with total of 918... With the 16th place finish, the Eagles did not advance to the NCAA Championships. Ashland was the third-best finisher among GLIAC schools – Grand Valley State was sixth (887) and Ferris State finished tied for 10th (896)... Junior Brendan Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and senior Steven Bednar (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow) each finished the tournament at 12-over par. Jenkins fired a 3-over 75 on Wednesday... Senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) also shot a 75 in the final round and finished 15-over par for the tournament. Junior Mark Scott (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) shot a 77 on Wednesday and was also 15-over over the 54-hole tournament.

 

Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's golf team posted a 302 team score in Wednesday's (May 9) final round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Super Regional to finish in a tie for 10th place at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo... The Bulldogs concluded the 54-hole event with a 896 team score to finish tied with Abilene Christian (Texas) in the super regional featuring 20 schools.  The top five teams overall advanced to the NCAA-II Championships... FSU shot scores of 300 on Monday, 294 on Tuesday and then 302 on Wednesday in its final team action of the 2011-12 campaign... While the Bulldogs were not among the five teams advancing to the national championships, FSU will be represented individually by senior Kyle Wittenbach, who placed tied for fourth in the field.  The top two individuals not associated with one of the five qualifying teams also advanced and Wittenbach was among the two individual qualifiers... The Bulldogs' Trent Davison placed tied for 44th overall with a 226 total after shooting a 78 in the final round.  He was followed by senior Garrett Simons, who wound up tied for 54th at 228 following a 75 on Wednesday... FSU's Gary Bissell came in tied for 62nd with a 229 score as he carded a 81 over the final 18 holes of the competition.  Finally, Richard Weisenberger was tied for 91st in the field at 235 by shooting an 80 in round number three... Central Missouri State won the super regional crown with an 864 team score.  Washburn (Kan.) came in second at 876 followed by Central Oklahoma (877), Indianapolis (880) and St. Edward's (Texas) at 884 in the top five.  All five teams moved on to the NCAA-II Championships... The individual winner was Josh Creel of Central Oklahoma, who recorded a three-round total of 211 for the tournament to beat Central Missouri State's Jared King and Cy Moritz by two strokes each... FSU made its 10th consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearance in a row. The Midwest/South Central Regional was hosted by Lincoln (Mo.) University and consisted of 10 teams from the Midwest Region along with 10 from the South Central Region.

 

Findlay - The University of Findlay men's golf team wrapped up the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Regional on Wednesday, May 9 at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo.  The Oilers shot a 305 on the third and final day of competition and finished the tournament with a 924 (316, 303, 305), which was good for 18th place... Logan Cooke led the Oilers at the tournament and finished in a tie for 36th place with a three round score of 225 (77, 72, 76)... Michael Schmitmeyer and Marcus Hunt each tied for 44th at the regional with a score of 226 and led the Oilers on day three as they each carded a two-over par score of 74... Schmitmeyer fired a 78 in the opening round and a 74 in the second while Hunt carded a 77 on Monday and a 75 on Tuesday... Stephen Sinchock (84, 83, 81 – 248) and Jake North (87, 82, 81 – 250) also competed for Findlay as they finished 107th and 108th, respectively.



Grand Valley State - The Grand Valley State men's golf team just missed making its third appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship after finishing sixth in the Midwest/South Central Regional on Wednesday afternoon at the Jefferson City Country Club. The Lakers finished 23-over, carding a 296/296/295-887... The top five teams advance to the National Championship in Louisville, Ky. led by Central Missouri's 286/289/289-864 (E) score. Washburn placed second with an 876 (+12), while Central Oklahoma was just a stroke behind to finish third. Indianapolis (880) and St. Edward's (884) rounded out the teams advancing to the championship... For the third straight day, senior Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the way for the Lakers finishing in a tie for 10th on the individual leaderboard.  Shooks recorded a 218 (+2) for the three-round event, but struggled on the final day, shooting a 77 (+5)... Classmate Nick Gunthorpe (Lansing, Mich.) also placed in the Top 20 with a score of 219 (+3) to finish in a seven-way tie for 12th. Gunthorpe tallied his lowest score of the regional, carding a 69 (-3) with seven birdies and five bogeys to close out the tournament... Wrapping up the scoring for the Lakers were junior Chase Olsen (White Pigeon, Mich.) and sophomore Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) who tied for 50th with scores of 227 (+11). Olsen was one-under after the front nine, which helped him record his tournament-low 74 (+2) in the final round. Cunningham carded a 75 (+3) with three bogeys... Freshman Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) also played for GVSU, finishing in a tie for 71st with a 230 (+14)... The individual winner was Central Oklahoma's Josh Creel who finished five-under with a score of 211. Central Missouri's Cy Mortiz and Jared King also finished under par, carding 213's (-3).

 

 

Northwood - The Northwood University men’s golf team finished its 2012 season by competing at the NCAA Super Regional Monday-Wednesday (May 7-9)...The three-day, 54-hole event was held at the Jefferson City Country Club.  The course played as a 7,112 yard, par 72...Northwood shot team scores of 314-313-314 to finish at 941 overall, good for 20th place overall.  Central Missouri was the overall winner at 864, followed by Washburn at 876...Nick Prokop (Novi, Mich.) was the top finisher for the Timberwolves in the final tournament of his career.  He shot rounds of 76-77-82 for a total of 235.  He tied for 91st overall.

 

 

 

Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley State University golfer Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Home school) posted a final round 4-over par 76 at the NCAA DII Men's Golf Midwest/South Central Regional today (May 9) at the 7,112-yard layout at Jefferson City Country Club...Skidmore started on hole No. 10 for the second day in a row and found the back nine to be tougher than the front over the three day event. He would need to go low in the final round to climb the leaderboard and put himself in position for a berth in the NCAA DII Championships... Skidmore made par on his opening hole of the day before carding a bogey on the par-3 11th. Micah would record two more pars before another bogey on hole 14. However, Skidmore bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 15th... The redshirt freshman would go on to bogey the 16th and make two more pars going out in two-over 38 on the back nine... Skidmore would make the turn and bogey holes No. 3 and 7 while recording pars the remaining holes to shoot 38 on the front nine and finish at 4-over-par 76. Micah dropped a putt from 25-feet on his final hole (No. 9) to finish the event on a high note... The leader of the Cardinal golf squad ends the NCAA Super Regional with a three-day total of 223 (+7). Skidmore finished in a tie for 28th position in the 108 player field... The concludes the 2011-12 Saginaw Valley State University men's golf season. The young and talented squad of Cardinal golfers will be back next season to take a run at a GLIAC Championship.



Tiffin -  Tiffin University's men's golf team finished its standout 2012 season competing at the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Regional at Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Missouri. TU finished 17th of 20 teams. The top five teams moved on to further postseason play... Central Missouri won the event with a three-round score of 864. Seven GLIAC schools competed in the regional, with Grand Valley State finishing 6th with 887. Ferris State was 10th with 896. Ashland just edged the Dragons, shooting 918 while TU was next wth 920. Findlay (18th), Wayne State (19th) and Northwood (20th) rounded out the field... The Dragons opened with a 306 in round one and improved with a 302 in round two. TU was 15th after both rounds, but dropped off in round three, shooting 312... "We are very excited about the year we had," said TU coach Darby Roggow... Jon Klein led the Dragons overall, finishing 62nd with a 229 (78-74-77), while senior Dillon Klein also stayed consistent with a 231 (77-78-76). Blake DeBruyn (75-76-80)also shot 231, though he joined senior Jason Crow (77-74-83 for 234) with a difficult round three score. Tyler Maranville was fifth with scores of 77, 81, and 79 for a 237.

 

Wayne State University Wayne State - The Wayne State University men's golf team finished in 19th place at the NCAA Midwest/South Central Super Regional which concluded Wednesday at Jefferson City Country Club... Wayne State (936) turned in its best team score of the week (305) in Wednesday's final round.  The Warriors shot 318 on Monday and 313 on Tuesday... Alex LaSerra (Jackson, Mich./Napoleon) led the team with a three-day score of 231 (77-78-76), putting him in a tie for 79th place.  Tyler Haksluoto (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake) and Austin Hill (Troy, Mich./Avondale) each finished with scores of 233 to tie for 84th... Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) shot 75, matching Hill's second-round score for the lowest by a Warrior in the tournament, and tied for 100th place (239).  Rob Favaro (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) came in 106th place (244).
