EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Ashland senior guard/forward Kari Daugherty has been named the Daktronics, Inc. Midwest Region Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in a vote by the region’s sports information directors.
Daugherty, the 2011-12 WBCA National Player of the Year, has been spectacular in her final season with the Eagles. The 6-foot-1 All-American led Ashland to a 31-1 overall record and a 21-1 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Her 21.9 points and 13.6 rebounds per contest, both of which rank in the top three of the NCAA Division II, helped the Eagles capture both the GLIAC regular-season and tournament titles, and have positioned Ashland as the number one seed and host of this weekend’s NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament.
Joining Daugherty on the Daktronics All-Midwest Region first team is fellow teammate and classmate Daiva Gerbec, Indianapolis junior guard Katy McIntosh, Indianapolis senior guard Kristin Turner, and Findlay senior guard/forward Kayla Brown.
Gerbec aided Ashland’s run to a GLIAC title with 14.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest, while Brown helped Findlay to the No. 3 seed in this weekend’s NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament by averaging 17.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.
McIntosh and Turner helped UIndy capture the No. 8 seed in this weekend’s regional. McIntosh averaged 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per contest, while Turner contributed 16.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per outing.
The Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region second team consisted of Southern Indiana sophomore forward/center Anna Hackert, Michigan Tech senior guard Samantha Hoyt, Lewis sophomore forward Jess Reinhart, Grand Valley State senior guard/forward Briauna Taylor, Ferris State junior guard Sara DeShone, Urbana sophomore guard Ciara Geiger, and Wayne State senior forward Talisha Bridges.
Hackert led the Southern Indiana with 14.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per contest, while Hoyt led Michigan Tech, the No. 4 seed in the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament, with 16.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per appearance.
Reinhart helped lead Lewis to the GLVC East Division title and the GLVC Tournament crown as well as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament by tallying 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest. Bridges helped Wayne State to its second NCAA II Tournament appearance by racking up 15.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Taylor led Grand Valley State with 15.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, while DeShone paced Ferris State with 17.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per outing. Geiger paced Urbana with 18.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest.
The NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament begins Friday in Ashland, Ohio.
