Bay City, Mich. - Notre Dame College freshman Joey Davis (Compton, Calif./Santa Fe), was named Regional “Freshman of the Year” and "Most Outstanding Wrestler" while freshman teammate Almonte Patrick (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) was awarded the Most Falls, Least Amount of Time Regional award. Lake Erie College’s Kevin Hoogenboom was named Regional “Coach of the Year."

Notre Dame has earned a first-place finish at the NCAA-II Midwest
Regional Tournament, and nine Wrestling Falcons are now bound for
the sport's national tournament. Maurice Miller

Johnson (197) and Orlando Scales (Hwt.),
Marty Carlson (133), Jonatan
Rivera (149), Jeffery Pelton (157),
Eric Burgey (174) and Charles
Mason (184). Brian Hauser placed fifth at 125 and will be
an alternate for the National Championship Tournament field.
Genetin finished third on Sunday to clinch his fourth trip to the NCAA Championships. That will come in Birmingham, Ala., in two weeks (Mar. 8-9). Genetin is one of four Ashland wrestlers who will head south. Freshman Max Byrd (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) won a regional title at 125 pounds. Another freshman, Michael Labry (Twinsburg, Ohio), was the runner-up at 133 pounds. At 197 pounds, sophomore Joe Brandt (Versailles, Ohio) was second. To advance to nationals, a wrestler must place in the top four at regionals.
After making their first appearance at the national meet a year
ago, the Lake Erie College wrestling team is going back for more
after qualifying three wrestlers for the NCAA Division II
Championships in Birmingham, Ala. March 8-9. Sophomores Ian
Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and Dylan Zivic
(Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) along with junior Zak Vargo
(stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) are
“’Bama Bound” after earning top-four finishes at
the Super Region 2 Wrestling Championships which concluded Sunday
(Feb. 24) at Ashland University. All three are making their first
appearance at the national championships.
The Roughnecks racked up 78 points during the tournament and will
send four individuals to the NCAA Division II National Championship
on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala. Junior Ben
Sergent, senior Mason True, junior
Adam Walters and senior Andrew
Tumlin each finished as the runner-up in their respective
weight classes to lead the team.
Sophomores Jake Cramer and Kevin Christman placed fourth as the Tiffin University wrestling team closed out the NCAA Super Regional #2, Sunday. The finish qualifies the two for the NCAA Division II National Championships.
